Crescendo in the Cloud: Ana’s Online Learning Journey Hits a High Note

When Ana Castillo sat down at her keyboard for the first time, she had no idea that six years later, she’d be performing before thousands of people at her high school graduation ceremony. Ana didn’t just walk the stage with her Texas Online Preparatory School (TOPS) classmates this past June; she entertained them with a piano solo that was the crescendo of her years of dedication, learning, and passion for music.
The prelude to Ana’s musical journey began in her bedroom. Armed with a pawn shop keyboard and YouTube tutorials, she began to teach herself how to play. With no formal training and playing by ear, she practiced daily with relentless dedication. Her talent blossomed and soon she was performing at weddings, church services, and school events, culminating in a standout moment: playing at the 2025 Commencement Ceremony held at the University of Dallas.
Her path wasn’t always smooth.
Ana switched to online learning in sixth grade after feeling out of place in the traditional school setting. Despite doubts from others, she thrived in her new environment, finding friends, academic success, and her musical calling.
“Whenever I get complimented about my playing, I of course say thank you,” Ana shared, “but mainly I give all the glory to God because He heard my prayers and gave me this talent.”
Ana believes enrolling in TOPS changed her life trajectory.
“I met the sweetest and best friends there, learned an instrument, got better grades and NOW?! I’m graduating!! LIKE ITS CRAZZYYY!!”
Ana is also grateful for her parents who supported her decision to switch to online learning.
Finding an environment that helped her to thrive and focus on her dreams was also a blessing.
As she now sets her sights on a career in real estate, she will continue to play piano and be grateful for her family at home and at TOPS.
Ana’s music, heart, and determination have struck a chord with us all at TOPS and her community.
