Previously welcoming students in grades 3–12, TOPS is opening its virtual doors to even younger learners, offering families a warm, flexible, and high-quality option that still holds onto the heart of what school should feel like – supportive teachers, curious classmates, and room to grow.

“At TOPS, we believe every child deserves a joyful start to their school journey, and we’re so excited to now offer that to kindergartners and early elementary students across Texas,” said Kristina Nanini, Executive Director at TOPS. “We’ve listened to families who were looking for a different path – a safe place to learn, more one-on-one time, more insight into what is happening in their child’s classroom, and a setting that works better for their child. We’re proud to offer that from the very beginning now.”

A day in the life of a TOPS kindergartner includes a comforting welcome from their state-certified teacher during live online class, hands-on activities like simple science experiments or story time, and plenty of brain breaks to run, stretch, or dance out the wiggles. Parents or guardians – known as Learning Coaches – are close by, helping guide their child and cheering them on as they learn to read, explore numbers, and discover the world around them at their own pace.

Sarah Sumrall, a Student Support Manager at TOPS who previously worked with young children in both virtual and traditional classrooms, says the expansion couldn’t come at a better time. “I’ve seen just how transformative online learning can be for young students – especially those who need a little extra patience, fewer distractions, or just a more personalized approach,” she said. “What makes it special is how closely families get to walk alongside their child’s education. It’s a partnership – and the results are beautiful.”

From kindergarten all the way to high school graduation, TOPS is built to grow with students. In the early years, children receive focused attention, gentle guidance, and encouragement to fall in love with learning. As they grow older, students can explore career pathways in fields like healthcare and IT, take part in internships, and connect with mentors – all while earning a Texas high school diploma.

Enrollment is now open for the upcoming school year for all grade levels, K–12. Families curious about how TOPS works or how to get started can visit tops.k12.com to learn more.
