Capturing the Beauty in the Smallest Moments: How Online Learning Helped Emma Find Her Focus
When 10th grader Emma Thomas enrolled at Texas Online Preparatory School (TOPS), she was searching for an environment that would allow her to thrive both academically and personally. What she discovered through online learning was not just flexibility but a space to grow her confidence, creativity, and passion for photography.
Emma began her online learning journey in seventh grade after finding that traditional, in-person school settings could be overwhelming. As a neurodivergent student, the fast-paced and often sensory-heavy classroom environment presented unique challenges. Transitioning to TOPS gave her the ability to learn in a setting that supported her needs while also encouraging her to explore what truly inspired her.
“Online school has been really helpful for me,” Emma shared. “It allowed me to take a step back from everything that felt overwhelming and still continue learning in a way that works for me.”
With more time and creative freedom, Emma began to rediscover one of her earliest passions: art. Encouraged by her father, a professional photographer, she started experimenting behind the lens, capturing vivid details of nature and the world around her. “I love seeing close-up photos of insects and the structures of life as we know it,” she said. “It’s fascinating to capture something that people might usually overlook.”
That curiosity and dedication paid off in a big way when Emma earned 2nd Place in the 9th Grade Photography category of the 2025 K12 Art and Photography Competition, standing out among hundreds of talented student artists nationwide. Her winning photo featured a wasp, a creature often misunderstood, captured with precision and empathy.
“I wanted to show that they’re not the monsters people think they are,” Emma explained. “They play an important role in the world, and I wanted people to see that.”
For Emma, this recognition meant more than an award. It validated her voice and her perspective. “It made me realize that people do support my work and that it’s good enough to win something,” she said. “It really motivated me to keep going and keep improving.”
Today, Emma is channeling her love for nature and science into her future goals. She hopes to study biology or entomology in college and dreams of blending her creative side with her interest in the natural world, perhaps as a scientific photographer or illustrator.
Her story is a beautiful reminder that when students have the opportunity to learn in a way that meets their needs, they can uncover new strengths and passions. Through the support of TOPS and her family, Emma found a way to bring her art, science, and voice together, one photograph at a time.
